This beautiful post was published on LinkedIn. If we want energy for data centers, we need gas combustion turbines, and for this we also need materials, precision casting, HIP, vacuum furnaces, plasma spraying or EB-PVD, NDT, etc. The article shows that there are only 3 manufacturers in the world today. GE Vernova, Siemens Energy, Mitsubishi Power, and they have sold out of capacity by 2030. Only GE mentions a delay of 100 GW. Each gas turbine contains a set of blades made of materials such as GTD-111, René 80, IN738, CM247LC, monocrystalline SX. These materials are a little different than those of aircraft engines.
In addition to induction vacuum casting, these blades need mandatory HIP and post heat treatment processes such as solution treatment and aging. Each turbine has thousands of these blades, and unlike aircraft engines, these blades are significantly longer, 30 to 60 cm.
Casting, HIP and vacuum heat treatment are followed by drilling of cooling channels and coating (APS – Air Plasma Spray or EB-PVD – Electron beam PVD). An entire set of internal combustion turbine blades will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
A small data center needs 5-50 MW, a large one like Google, Microsoft, META needs 100 to 500 MW. Even though data centers draw energy from the grid, we can easily imagine it like this, one data center = one turbine = thousands of blades for hundreds of thousands of USD.
A beautiful idea for those who will participate in this boom.
